When we found out that where we were moving, the husband's first task was to try and buy a GPS map for Amman, Jordan. He soon found out that a GPS map for that area doesn't exist.
When we finally arrived, we figured out why. None of the roads in Jordan are properly named, mapped, or labeled. For instance, there was a road that stretched from the 1st Circle (a traffic landmark) into a beautiful historic neighborhood. Most people referred to it as Rainbow St. But that isn't its official name. Its official name is Al Hashemi street. Nothing like rainbow, really.
It was even 2008 before they put address numbers on the houses. Before we were #9, we spent a good year and a half as the house by the Embassy where you turn right at the dumpster and then right, next to the empty lot and the guard house.
What we learned is that directions are all relative. If it's easier to tell someone to turn left at the Blue Mosque to go to Safeway, then that's what you say. No need to use street names. My advice? Learn how to get home or back to your hotel using landmarks only. Much easier way to travel!
